What is Bamboo Temple Jizo-in?

Jizo-in bamboo

Jizo-in is a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect in Kyoto.

It is one of the best temples in Kyoto because there are few tourists and you can spend your time quietly.

This time, we will introduce the charm of Jizo-in, which is small but has a strong personality.

Another name is "Bamboo Temple"

Jizo-in bamboo

The official name of the temple is "Eryuzan Jizo-in".

Another name is "Bamboo Temple", and many bamboos grow there.

Jizoin moss

Not only bamboo but also moss and autumn leaves are available, so it is a temple that you can enjoy all year round.

Ikkyu-san's birthplace

Statue of Ikkyu from Jizoin

That famous Ikkyu was born and raised in this Jizo-in.

The reason why I lived in such a place outside the center of Kyoto is that Ikkyu-san's father, Emperor Gokomatsu, is involved.

During the time of Emperor Go-Komatsu, there were two emperors in the north and south. It's the Northern and Southern Dynasties.

However, with the help of Yoshimitsu Ashikaga (the person who built Kinkakuji Temple), who was growing in power at that time, the emperors of the north and south were unified.

It is a well-established theory that the north and the south were swaying due to the problem of succession, and they got stuck in the house, so they hid in Jizo-in for their own safety.

A nice garden

Jizoin Garden

Jizo-in itself is not that big, but there is also a garden where you can take off your shoes and enjoy yourself.

Even when I went to the autumn leaves season, which was full of tourists from Kyoto, it was quite quiet.

Jizo-in heart-shaped window

The windows in the room are a little heart-shaped.

A picture of Hosokawa Gracia at Jizoin

It may seem that the painting is a little out of place, but he is closely related to the Hosokawa family who built the Jizo-in Temple.

The picture is "Hosokawa Gracia", the daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide. (The name Gracia is not a glittering name, but a baptismal name when converting to Christianity.)

When he was young, he was imprisoned as "the daughter of Akechi, a traitor," but eventually he married the Hosokawa clan and became a Christian.

However, Mitsunari Ishida tries to use Gracia, who lived peacefully, as a hostage. (Because it was just before the Battle of Sekigahara, Ishida wanted to have the Hosokawa clan on his side.)

Gracia, who was surrounded by the mansion and had no escape, decided not to let Mitsunari Ishida use even the corpse.Explode the entire mansion with gunpowder! We have reached the spectacular end.

It is said that Mitsunari Ishida became traumatized by this matter and stopped taking hostages forcibly.

If you know the picture of such an explosion scene, the appearance will change.

Travel time is 30 minutes

Jizo-in main hall

It's a small temple, so you can get there in about 15 to 30 minutes if you go around quickly.

Even if you go to the autumn leaves season, it is hardly crowded.

Finally

Jizo-in exit

Jizo-in is a small but packed place with the charm of a temple in Kyoto.

It's a little-known spot with few people, so if you're tired of the large number of tourists in Kyoto, it's a tourist destination that you can especially recommend.
