What is the Northern Daichi Aquarium?

Northern Daichi Aquarium is an aquarium located in Kitami City, Hokkaido.

Although it is a small aquarium, it is a unique facility because Hajime Nakamura, who is famous as an aquarium producer, volunteered to help with the design.

"World's first" and "Japan's best"

Producer Mr. Nakamura cherishes a realistic exhibition that makes the natural world a lump of water and brings it to the aquarium. (Called "water mass")

Even with a low budget that is said to be one-twentieth of other aquariums, it has become an aquarium with many "world's first" and "Japan's best" that can only be seen here.

Waterfall basin where life glitters

The world's first aquarium where you can observe the waterfall basin from below.

A waterfall flows from above, and you can see the fish swimming in the torrent.

Dolly Varden is swimming, like a char living in a cold area. (Also known as: Karafuto Iwana)

The water conditions change all the time, so it was a mysterious aquarium that you could see all the time.

Jump aquarium

The world's first aquarium where fish jump.

When the water level drops, yamame trout have a habit of jumping upstream in search of a new water place. (It's called "run-up: sojo")

It's a water tank that uses it, but when I went, it didn't jump ...　

It repeats full and low water levels in a cycle of about 20 minutes, so let's aim for when the water level drops.

In the notes, it is written that "it is never seen".

Depending on the mood of the yamame trout, it will not run up even if the water level drops.

If you feel like it, you can't help it.

Japan's number one freshwater fish "Ito"

Ito is the largest freshwater fish in Japan and is said to be a phantom fish.

Currently, it inhabits only a part of Hokkaido, and its growth rate is slow, and it takes more than 1 years to exceed 10 m.

At this aquarium, more than 40 such precious Ito are exhibited, and it is impressive.

By the way, the scientific name is "Parahucho perryi", which is derived from the fact that Perry of Kurofune brought Ito back to Europe and the United States and introduced it.

Magic hot spring water

Onneyu, where the aquarium is located, is an area where hot springs spring out.

At first, I started using spring water and hot springs to reduce costs, but I noticed that fish grow faster than ordinary water, so it was named "magic hot spring water".

Certainly, the texture of the skin is fine and it looks beautiful.

Spring water and hot springs are said to have a beautiful skin effect on fish.

Commentary full of ideas

It's not just the aquarium that's amazing.

The explanation of fish is also devised so that it can be read happily.

The giant mottled eel on the left was upright and immovable for some reason.

It is a mini size and cute Fusenwo.

I am not very good at swimming even though I am a fish, and it is cute to move while moving short fins.

Redtail catfish

Channel catfish are called catfish because their whiskers resemble cats.

This catfish has a red tail, so it has a red tail at the beginning of its name.
It's easy to remember.

By the way, the name in the Amazon of origin is "Pirarara"is.
I thought, "Seriously?", But when I looked it up, it was true.

Arapaima

Arapaima, the largest freshwater fish in the world.

It is also called a "living fossil" because it has not changed its appearance for more than XNUMX million years.

From the appearance, it has the style of an ancient fish.

But maybe because the water is too transparent, or because of the skin-beautifying effect of the hot springs, I feel that my face is different from the pirarucu I've seen so far.

In addition, there are "Four Seasons Aquarium" where the surface of the aquarium freezes in winter, and Doctor Fish who eats old keratin.

It's a small aquarium, but you can see things that can only be found here, so if you like aquariums, make sure to visit.

Admission and travel time

Admission is 670 yen for adults and free for elementary school students and younger.

I think it takes about 40 to 60 minutes to go around slowly.

Access

It takes about 20 minutes by bus from the nearest Rubeshibe Station to "Roadside Station Onneyu Onsen" where the aquarium is located.

First of all, I think that Rubeshibe station is far away, so let's visit it when you go to Asahikawa / Abashiri area.

Kitakitsune Farm

It is "Kitakitsune Farm" which is a 5-minute walk from the aquarium.

You can see free-range foxes and raccoon dogs up close.

Koropokuru Shadow Painting Museum (in Chacha World)

It is a museum of Seiji Fujishiro, famous for shadow painting.

It is about 30km north of the aquarium.

It's easy to reach by car, but it's a little inconvenient by train.
