What is the London National Gallery?

Inside view of the London National Gallery

The London National Gallery is a museum located in London, England.

It has many famous works,It will be the XNUMXth largest museum in the world in terms of the number of visitors.

The "London National Gallery Exhibition" will be held in Japan in 2020, so this time we will focus on the exhibition.

Outline of the event

This is the first time in 200 years of museum history that the collections of the National Gallery of London have been rented together.

Therefore, all 61 works on display are coming to Japan for the first time!

These are works that you may never see in Japan, so don't miss them.

Schedule

Tokyo (National Museum of Western Art): June 2020-6, 18(End)

Osaka (The National Museum of Art, Osaka):2020 year 11 month 3 day to 2021 year 1 month 31 day

(Note) Only the Osaka exhibition remains.

What is the quality of the incoming collection?

What is worrisome about this kind of exhibition is the quality of the collection on display.

There are many exhibitions that are only rough drawings or have few representative works, even though they are advertised as "○○○ exhibition! Miracle held!".

However, this London National Gallery exhibition is different.

There will even be signboard works that make you think, "Can I rent it out?", So you can see the seriousness of the person who planned it.

Works that can be seen at the exhibition

Introducing the collections that actually come to Japan.
(The photo is taken locally in London.)

Van Gogh "Sunflowers"

Van Gogh "Sunflowers"
Catalog of the National Gallery in London (London)

It is one of the 6 "sunflowers" in the world and is the favorite of this exhibition.

Undoubtedly, it is a signboard work of the National Gallery of London, and it is so full of signboards that it is on the cover of the local catalog.

As the subtitle is "Proof of Friendship with Gauguin", it is a work when Van Gogh formed a community of artists with his friend Gauguin.

Perhaps because of the hope, the color tone is bright overall, and the background is yellow.

The touch of the sunflower and the brush on the background is completely different, so please check it out.

Vermeer "Lady Seated at a Virginal"

Vermeer "Lady Seated at a Virginal"

Everyone loves Vermeer.

At the Vermeer exhibition in 2019, the number of visitors was the highest in Japan that year.

The number of works is very small, and only about 30 works have been confirmed, so it is a super valuable item.

He is also called a "painter of light" and often draws light from small windows, but this time it is a rare work without windows.

Murillo "Little John the Baptist and the Lamb"

Murillo "Little John the Baptist and the Lamb"

Personally, this is my favorite work in this exhibition.

Murillo has nothing to do with drawing a child, but in reality he has lost his child due to illness.

With that in mind, the impression you get when you see this picture may change a little.

Alberto Cuyp

Aelbert Cuyp "Riverside scenery with horsemen and peasants"
"Riverside scenery with horsemen and peasants" (This does not come to Japan. It is a substitute because there was no photo)

If you draw a cow, the work of Albert Cuyp, the world's top painter (personally, the two strongest with Brascasat) will come.

Unfortunately, I haven't taken a picture of the work exhibited this time, so I'm posting a substitute work.

The works that come to Japan have similar themes, so please enjoy the scenery with cows.

Light of Derby

Light of Derby "An Experiment on a Bird in a Pump"
"An Experiment on a Bird in Pump" (This does not come to Japan. It is a substitute because there was no photo)

This is also a substitute work because there was no photo of the exhibited work.

He is a great painter who expresses light and shadow, and I like how to draw light next to La Tour (a famous painter at night).

But this time, the figure paintings will be on display!

The contrast between light and shadow doesn't really matter!

Chiku show!

Other source works

In addition, many works with acupoints such as Rembrandt, El Greco, Degas, and Monet will be exhibited.

The picture of John Constable's deer was also good.

Collection that does not come to Japan

The collection at the National Gallery in London is not like this.

I will not come to Japan, but I will introduce other works.

Leonardo da Vinci "Virgin of the Rocks"

Leonardo da Vinci "Virgin of the Rocks"

This work was drawn by the genius of the century, Leonardo da Vinci.

If this was to come to Japan, it would be a masterpiece that would have increased the congestion of the venue by 20%.

By the way, there is a picture with the same composition in the Louvre Museum in Paris, and it is controversial which one was drawn first.

Hans Holbein "The Ambassadors"

Hans Holbein "The Ambassadors"

He is a famous writer for deception (anamorphosis).

I am surprised that this technique was already established about 500 years ago.
(The most important bottom part of this picture is cut off, but don't worry.)

Hans Holbein "The Ambassadors"

Looking at the painting from diagonally above to the right, a skull emerges like this.

Quentin Matsys "The Ugly Duchess"

Quentin Matsys "The Ugly Duchess"

The work is "Is there a Baba like you?", But this also has a presence that I can't imagine being drawn 500 years ago.

It is said to have become a model for the Duchess of "Alice in Wonderland" (the owner of the Cheshire Cat) because of her very distinctive appearance.

Duchess of "Alice in Wonderland"

If you ask me, it's just like that.

Congestion forecast for Osaka exhibition

I actually went.

Admission was restricted, so it didn't mean that I was looking at people's heads longer than the work, but it was fairly crowded.

If you have something you want to buy at the shop, make sure to go by at least 11:00.Shops after the afternoon are hell.

We recommend buying a timed ticket from 9:00 and going around 9:20.

The reason for delaying 20 minutes from admission is that the line ends at that point.

There is also a free 100-yen return locker, so leave your luggage and enjoy yourself.

Access to the National Museum of Art, Osaka

Exterior of the National Museum of Art, Osaka

It takes about 20 minutes on foot from "Osaka Station".

The only decent nearest station is Keihan's "Watanabebashi Station", and access is slightly poor.

The rest is about a 10-minute walk from JR "Fukushima Station" or the subway "Higobashi Station".

Finally

The London National Gallery exhibition is full of precious works that may never be seen in Japan again.

Even if you are not interested in art, this is a good opportunity to see all the famous artists, so please visit the museum.

Also, if you have the timing, let's go to London, the home of the city.

Although it is a copy of a porcelain panel painting, the reproducibility is amazing even for the director who owns the original.

Van Gogh's sunflowers are also a very luxurious museum where you can see everything including the phantom 7th one at once.
