What is the Hyoto Festival?

The Ice Festival is an ice festival held in Chitose, Hokkaido from late January to early February.

When I went without any prior knowledge, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the ice.
At such an outdoor event, it may have been the biggest shock ever.

This time, we will introduce the charm of such "Ice Festival".

Lake Shikotsu is the venue

Lake Shikotsu at the Ice Festival

The venue, Lake Shikotsu, is 360m deep and is the second deepest in Japan. (The first place in Japan is Lake Tazawa in Akita Prefecture, 2m)

The transparency of water is also one of the highest in Japan, and it is often the best in Japan in the water quality survey conducted by the Ministry of the Environment.

Ice cubes are made by spraying such highly transparent water with a sprinkler.
As a result, it shines in a pale color called Lake Shikotsu blue in the daytime, and illuminates the light well at night, making it look like another world.

Introduction of works

I will introduce the work when I went.

Crystal of the Ice Festival

From the entrance of the venue, it is another world.

Objects that imitate natural crystals are beautifully lit up.

Too big ice cubes

Main of the Ice Festival

When you pass through the entrance, the first thing that pops into your eyes is the large ice cube on the right of the photo.

From here on, I started thinking, "Oh, this event is amazing."

Moss cave

Pine tree at the Ice Festival

When you enter a cave-like place, you will reach an area like a different world illuminated by green lights.

When I first saw it, I didn't know what it was, it was just a shock.

Pine tree at the Ice Festival

It is a cave of pine trees covered with ice.

The passage was one-way, so I made two laps involuntarily.

Ice chandelier

When I first saw this, it was too beautiful and the tension went up.

Crystal of the Ice Festival

It is a work in which the transparency of water stands out with this brilliance even when viewed from a close distance.

Fortress-like object

Objet d'art of the Ice Festival

It is an object of a building like a fortress.

It will be completed by sprinkling water with a sprinkler 1 hours a day for about a month and a half.

Inside the Ice Festival

The inside is designed to be inserted, and it looks like this.

Many things of this level are lined up.

A space that children can enjoy

Ice rink at the Ice Festival

It is a sliding table and skating rink that can only be used by children.

Even though it was a skating rink, it didn't seem to be that smooth.

Ice shrine

Ice Festival Shrine

There is also a shrine at the venue.

It's all made of ice, so you can stick money on the ice wall.

Nearby iron bridge

Lake Shikotsu Railway Bridge

It has nothing to do with the festival, but I took a picture because the atmosphere of the nearby railway bridge was good.

Date

It is held every year from late January to early February.

If you go in early February, you can go with the Sapporo Snow Festival, so let's aim for it.

The opening time is from 9:00 to 22:00, and the illumination is from 16:30.

It's cold without a hump, so let's take proper measures against the cold. (It was -10 degrees when I went)

There are also fireworks on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays

Fireworks at the Ice Festival

Fireworks will be launched on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays during the event.
When I went, it was about 300 shots.

Anyway, let's visit on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Time required and congestion

Venue of the Ice Festival

If you just walk aroundIt's about an hour.

However, if you are not from a snowy country, you will need to warm up at the rest area once every 30 minutes because the cold weather will soon reach your limit of activity.

I think it will take about +30 minutes including breaks and shopping.

As for the degree of congestion, there are some works that line up a little, but there is no problem because it can be put in in 2 to 3 minutes.
(Saturday and Sunday during the Sapporo Snow Festival)

Admission fees

Entrance to the Ice Festival

The admission fee of 300 yen is a voluntary payment in the form of a "cooperation fee".

You'll also get a postcard instead of an admission ticket, so pay for it to keep this great event going.

Access

There is no nearest station, so it is recommended to take a sightseeing bus from Sapporo Station for a limited time.

Finally

Access is a bit bad,You will enjoy a fantastic and beautiful world that you can't find anywhere else.
