What is Okochi Sanso Garden?

Okochi Sanso Garden is a garden located in Arashiyama, Kyoto.

Since it is located at the final point of "Bamboo Forest Road", many people may know only the name.

This time, I will introduce such Okochi Sanso Garden.

Built by Denjiro Okochi

The garden was built by the prewar movie star Denjiro Okochi (died 1898-1962).

Honestly, he is an unfamiliar actor, but recently he has become a model for a character called "Kyoujiro (real name: Den Jiro)" in a jump manga dress.It is a character in a relatively important position in the Wano country edition.

The garden, which was completed by such a movie star over 1930 years from 30, is so large that it cannot be thought of as privately owned.

First, let's climb the stone steps along the route.

You will have to walk on stairs and narrow roads for 30 minutes, so it is recommended that you wear comfortable shoes.

Chumon

If you climb a little, you will see the atmospheric "Nakamon".It is also designated as a registered tangible cultural property.

The height is only about 170 cm, so be careful if you are tall.

Mahayana

It is "Mahayana Kaku" which becomes the central facility of the garden.

Even when Denjiro stayed, he basically used this building.

It is said that Denjiro selected all the grass in the park, but is this also a commitment?

Mochibutsudo

This is the "Mochibutsu-do" where Denjiro was zazen.

It is a small hall where one person can do meditation.

Gekkaitei

From "Tsukikatei" on the hill, you can overlook Kyoto.

From near the top of the mountain, you can see the scenery that is typical of Arashiyama.

The park is large

I hear that the popularity of movies in the days when there was no TV was tremendous, but it makes me wonder if the actors' rewards were also amazing.

Sights of autumn leaves

From mid-November to late November, the maple leaves in the park are beautifully dyed.

I went there in late November, maybe it was a little late from the best time to see it.

However, I was able to see the maple carpets here and there in the garden, probably because I missed the best time to see them.

The entrance fee of 1000 yen includes tea fee.

It's a big deal, so let's stop by.

If you follow the route, you will have matcha at "Chikufuken", which you will arrive on your way home.

Whether it's always on standby, tea will come out in about 1 minute after ordering.

Congestion

It is located in the center of Arashiyama's tourist destination, but there are few customers probably because it is not well known.

Arashiyama's autumn leaves season is so crowded that you'll want to go home soon, but you can relax here.

Travel time is 60 minutes

It's okay if you take a leisurely walk around the park for 45 minutes and a tea break for a total of 60 minutes.

As you walk around, you may want to avoid hot summer days as much as possible.

Start time and entrance fee

It may be discouraging to spend 1000 yen on the garden, but I feel that it is cheap because it comes with tea confectionery.

Access

From the nearest train station, walk along the "Bamboo Forest Road".

By the way, "Torokko Arashiyama Station" may be seen as the nearest station on the map, but this is a station dedicated to sightseeing trains that you cannot get on unless you make a reservation. (Trains departing from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station do not stop at Hozukyo Station)
