What is Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple?
Adashino Nenbutsuji is a temple located in Arashiyama, Kyoto.
Famous as an unrelated Buddhist temple, there are countless stone towers (gravestones) lined up.
This time, I would like to introduce you to Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple.
Kukai was built 1200 years ago
It is said that Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple was built in 811 by Kukai (the founder of the Shingon sect, also known as Kobo Daishi).
At first, it was a place of burial where the corpse was simply left, but later it turned into a burial.
The place name of Kashino has the meaning of "impermanent field".
Unrelated Buddhas scattered in this area during the Meiji era were collected and became the present form.
The number of stone pagodas is about 8000.
Scary ghost spot?
Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple has been a graveyard for over 1000 years and is sometimes treated like a psychic spot.
However, even though it is an unrelated Buddha, it is now a well-established memorial service, so I don't think you need to worry about that.
Shooting prohibited in the riverbank of Saiin
The place where the stone pagodas are lined up is called "Saiin no Kawahara".
It is the riverbank of the Sanzu River that connects this world with that world.
Shooting is prohibited inside, so let's take a memorial tour.
What is the true psychic spot in Kyoto?
Speaking of historically dangerous places in Kyoto, I think it is around the Kamo River from Sanjo River to Rokujo River where the execution site was located.
Nowadays, only couples can be seen in Kamogawa (prejudice), but in the past, it was the place where Goemon Ishikawa, Mitsunari Ishida, and Isami Kondo of the Shinsengumi were exposed and fired.
There are countless other sinners being executed, so I think it's by far the number that left a grudge in the world.
However, the area around Sanjogawara has high land prices and is under urban development, so there is no sense of psychic spot.
I personally don't like the fact that Sanjogawara, which was an execution site for nearly 1000 years, is not a psychic spot, but a place like Adashino Nenbutsuji, which is a memorial spot, is treated as a psychic spot.
Other highlights
Bamboo forest road
There is a famous "Bamboo Forest Road" in the center of Arashiyama, but there is a similar road at Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple.
There are few tourists here, so you can enjoy the atmosphere carefully.
Stupa
There is a Buddhist temple that imitates the world heritage site "Sanchi Tower" in India.
It doesn't fit in the photo, but it's fairly large.
Congestion
It is located in Arashiyama, a tourist destination, but it is vacant because the number of tourists who come to such an outback is limited.
Even if you go to the autumn leaves season, there are few people, so it is a recommended place even when you are tired of the crowd.
Travel time is 30 minutes
It's not such a big temple, so you can see it in about 30 minutes.

Access is poor, so we recommend taking a taxi from Arashiyama Station. (Since it is about 3km, the taxi fare should be about 1000 yen)
Buses are often late, so it's best not to use them except in the morning.
On the way back from Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple, it is also recommended to walk back to Arashiyama Station.

Finally
Access to Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple is poor, but the 8000 stone towers are powerful and can't be seen anywhere else.
It's a little-known spot with few tourists, so be sure to visit it when you go to Arashiyama.
Recommended for those who want to go to a slightly different place after the second trip to Kyoto.
