What is Yakushima

The largest "Jomon cedar" on Yakushima

Yakushima is an island located in the south of Kagoshima.

It is also a model of Ghibli "Princess Mononoke", and is famous for its Yakusugi, which is over 1000 years old, and the forest covered with moss.

This time, we will introduce recommended tours and gourmet foods for those who are new to Yakushima.

Registered as a World Heritage Site

Yakushima Kuguri Cedar

Yakushima was selected as Japan's first World Heritage Site in 1993.
(Registered at the same time as Himeji Castle, Horyuji Temple, and Shirakami Mountains)

The reason for the selection is that it is an excellent native of Sugi, which is endemic to Japan, and that it is rich in nature, where many endangered species live.

Sugi was an endemic species of Japan. There are many pollinosis in Japan.

By the way, Yakushima has high humidity and pollen quickly falls to the ground.
Please be assured that people with hay fever will not develop it unless it is very serious.

What is Yakusugi?

It is a cedar that grows naturally on Yakushima.

Since Yakushima is a rocky island, there is little nutrition in the land and plants grow slowly.

Therefore, the wood grain is fine and the resin content is high, so it has the characteristic of being less likely to rot than other cedars.

Yakushima trekking

Many people who come to Yakushima for the first time are aiming for the "Jomon Sugi Course" or the "Shiratani Unsuikyo Course".

↓ Details will be explained in another article.

Yakushima Trekking | What you need to know before going to Jomon Sugi and Shiratani Unsuikyo (Kagoshima) ☆ ☆

I went to Jomon cedar and Shiratani Unsuikyo on Yakushima.I will explain the highlights and things I wanted to know in advance.

Tour bus tour "Yakuza"

Trekking is good, but we also recommend the Yakuza-go bus tour around Yakushima.

You can choose from "AM", "PM", and "AM + PM (XNUMX day)" courses to efficiently explore Yakushima.

↓ See this article for details.

Yakuza | Bus tour around Yakushima in half a day (Kagoshima) ★★

I got on the local bus tour "Yakuza-go" in Yakushima.
Personally, I was more satisfied than Jomon cedar trekking, and it was a day where I could enjoy the charm of Yakushima.

Specialty gourmet

Next, I will introduce the gourmet food of Yakushima.

Flying fish (flying fish)

Flying fish in Yakushima

It is a flying fish that is a specialty of Yakushima.

Flying fish are migratory fish that pass through the Kuroshio Current near Yakushima and are often caught.

You can enjoy the appearance, so let's eat it once when you come to Yakushima.
(You can also eat feathers)

Recommended souvenirs

Here are some recommended sweets that I have tasted at a souvenir shop in Yakushima.
(Judgment by dogmatism, prejudice, and Kansai people's tongue.)

No. XNUMX Baba Confectionery "Ponkan Monaka"

Yakushima? Souvenirs

Monaka is a luxurious use of Ponkan, a specialty of Yakushima.

It's purely delicious, and it's easy to see that the packaging is a specialty of Yakushima.

It's reasonably priced at around 1 yen each, and it's a perfect souvenir.

Search for "Ponkan Monaka" on Rakuten Ichiba
(Amazon was omitted because there were only strange vendors)

XNUMXnd place Baba Confectionery "Yakusugi Senbei"

Baba Confectionery is the same as the XNUMXst place, but the level of sweets from this manufacturer was high.

"Yakusugi Senbei" has an annual ring pattern, and it looks and tastes good.

The price is about 1 yen per sheet, so it's perfect as a souvenir to scatter at work.

Find "Yakusugi Senbei" on Rakuten Ichiba

XNUMXrd place Mamuzukichin "Nagata's salt cookie"

Yakushima? Souvenirs

A salt cookie with nuts in the shape of a sea turtle.

The salt is just an accent, so it has a gentle taste.

It costs about 1 yen each, but the small packaging is simple and it is difficult to tell where the souvenir is.

Search for "Nagata's salt cookies" on Rakuten Ichiba

Other than that, "Yakushima's sweet cake" was also very delicious, but the Anno potatoes I use are a specialty of Tanegashima, so they are excluded from the ranking.

Precautions for traveling to Yakushima

How many days do you need?

Yakushima Port

I want 3 nights and 4 days.

People outside of Kyushu take half a day to a day to move, so I think that is the lowest line.

For the minimum number of days

Day 1: Arrived at Yakushima.Maybe just sleep.

Day 2: Yakushima trekking (Shiratani Unsuikyo and Taikoiwa

Third day:YakuzaXNUMX day bus tour.

Day 4: Go home.

What is the recommended travel time?

We recommend late March-April or October-November.

Yakushima in winter is more difficult, and in summer there are a lot of insects, so people who are not accustomed to the mountains should avoid it.

I went to the end of March and the temperature was just right enough to wear a raincoat and walk around.

I didn't see any bugs.

Yakushima weather

Yakushima Road

Yakushima is a very rainy area, as described in the novel "Ukigumo" that "it rains 35 days a month".

Let's act as if it rains.

A raincoat is also essential for trekking.

Where should i stay

Yakushima? Supermarket
Supermarket "Ban-chan" in the Abo area

Most people will be troubled in the Miyanoura area and the Awa area,We recommend the Miyanoura area.

After all, there are more shops in Miyanoura, and it is close to the entrance of "Shiratani Unsuikyo Course".
(Conversely, the entrance to the "Jomon Sugi Course" is closer to Awa)

People outside the Miyanoura / Anbo area may have trouble with places to eat, so be sure to book an inn with meals.

How to get to Yakushima

Propeller plane at Yakushima Airport

There are ferry and airplane access methods,I recommend an airplane.
(Kagoshima Airport → Ferry takes too long. Cancellation rate in stormy weather is also lower for airplanes)

There are three locations, Osaka Itami Airport, Fukuoka Airport, and Kagoshima Airport, but let's consider a plan to transfer at Kagoshima Airport, which has the most flights.

For people from Kansai to Kyushu, there is also a route of "Hakata Station → Fukuoka Airport → Yakushima by Shinkansen". (I went with this. Hakata station and Fukuoka airport are too close and I'm afraid)

Finally

Photo from above Hakata
From the sky above Hakata

Yakushima is an island full of the charm of nature, but it is not a place that you can easily go to because it is too inaccessible.

Let's bring a purpose such as "I definitely want to see Jomon cedar!"

If you like trekking, you may be addicted to Yakushima dozens of times, so let's go even if you crawl.

Miki Watanabe, who is famous for the Watami group, is also addicted to Yakushima and has been to Yakushima dozens of times.

In any case, make a plan when you go to Yakushima so that you will not have any regrets.
